Overview
Overview
Everything that happens, happens somewhere. We rely so much on devices and data but how to do we capture that data? So much information depends on location.
During the Science - Digital Infrastructure Engineering Systems program at University of Melbourne, you’ll combine geographic and location information from thousands of sources – like global positioning satellites, land surveying, laser mapping and smartphones to map and visualise our environments. You might use computer technology to build 3D visual representations of our cities to design better transport systems – or you could build the next generation of Google Earth.
There are many ways you can use this kind of knowledge in your career. Buildings and the construction industry are using digital infrastructure engineering to plan and optimise how we build. We need digital infrastructure engineers to help us predict and respond to natural disasters.
You’ll develop knowledge in spatial measurement and analysis for both built and natural environments. This means you’ll be able to write and read software algorithms, plot data and create digital representations of our physical world.
Your studies will cover topics such as:
- Land surveying and mapping
- Remote sensing
- Geographic information systems (GIS)
- Image processing
- Land administration
Careers
As a digital infrastructure engineer, you could:
- Design better transport networks by using pedestrian data to map out cities
- Build safer and more efficient buildings by creating a digital 3D representation of the building to assess the construction methods and materials
- Fly drones to assess natural disaster areas and help prevent problems before they occur or help evacuees
- Use satellite data to optimise wind farms by measuring human and environmental impact.
