Overview
This Counselling and Addiction Practice course from Wellington Institute of Technologydevelops graduates who are able to practice professionally according to the values and ethics of the Addiction Practitioners’ Association, Aotearoa-New Zealand (DAPAANZ) and the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC).

You are required to attend on-site block courses at the Whitireia (Porirua) campus, as well as complete online learning, which you will need to self manage. This programme uses a blended teaching approach to enable the development of skills and knowledge. These may include active learning, self-directed, tutor directed learning, online learning, tutorials, workplace learning (practicum), simulated workplace learning, self and peer assessment, group work, professional supervision, reflective practice.
Programme Structure
Course structure:
- Year one introduces ākonga to a range of counselling approaches, concepts of mental health, society and social justice, tiriti o waitangi, indigenous knowledge and varies theories, that impact themselves, clients and the community.
- Year two is aimed at developing the students understanding of research, approaches to counselling and addictions practice skills with individuals, families/whānau in a professional setting.
- Year three consolidates practice and theory knowledge in preparation for undertaking the roles and responsibilities of the industry. Preparing ākonga for membership to NZAC NZCCA and DAPAANZ.
