Overview
In an era marked by significant global challenges such as biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, climate change, and threats to food and energy security, the Environmental Land Management programme at Harper Adams University is designed to address these pressing issues. This interdisciplinary course focuses on the intricate relationships between water, energy, and food, equipping students with the expertise necessary for effective climate change adaptation and mitigation, sustainable land use, and food security.
The programme places a strong emphasis on practical approaches to land management, ensuring that students learn to balance societal needs with environmental health. Key topics include promoting biodiversity, ensuring clean water and air, and safeguarding communities from natural hazards exacerbated by climate change and agricultural practices. Throughout the course, students will develop the skills needed to tackle sustainable development challenges, with a combination of theoretical foundations and practical applications.
Students can expect a diverse range of insights into environmental management and sustainability, fostering transferable skills that are invaluable in both graduate employment and further academic pursuits. Each year of the programme includes fieldwork, with a residential field course scheduled for every academic year. Notably, international field courses are offered in the second and final years, with the latter currently taking place in South Africa and the former in Europe. These experiences are complemented by numerous local site visits that contextualise the theoretical knowledge gained in lectures and seminars.
The course is grounded in industry best practices, incorporating cutting-edge technologies such as remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and geographical information systems (GIS). These tools are integral to promoting effective environmental management and sustainability, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the demands of the workforce.
The first two years of study emphasise professional development and employability, culminating in a mandatory placement year of at least 44 weeks. During this time, students have access to comprehensive support from placement managers and dedicated tutors, ensuring a smooth transition back to university for their final year after completing their placements.
Located in a picturesque rural setting, Harper Adams University offers easy access to the stunning landscapes of Cheshire and Shropshire, including the Meres and Mosses and the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The university's 400-hectare estate, featuring a variety of agricultural and semi-natural habitats, serves as a living laboratory for students, enhancing their learning experience through site visits and practical exercises.
This programme builds on a rich legacy of related courses, delivered by experienced faculty with extensive academic and professional backgrounds in environmental management. Graduates of the Environmental Land Management programme will find a wealth of career opportunities in fields such as environmental consultancy, sustainable business management, renewable energy, and catchment management. Employers range from non-governmental organisations like the National Trust to local authorities and the Environment Agency.
