Overview
History (Hons) majors learn to think critically and creatively about the narratives we create of our own past and how that affects what we might do in the present. The skills of critical analysis and clarity of expression acquired by History majors make them an increasingly desirable commodity in our global world.
The History (Hons) major at The American College of Greece takes advantage of the best of the American and the UK educational systems. The major demands breadth of its students with required modules that span the Old and the New World, the East and the West, the Ancient and the Modern.
As students progress in their studies and gain confidence in the study and analysis of primary and secondary historical sources, required modules turn to focused study that permits students to undertake research papers that encourage delving deeply into topics of interest. This focus culminates in a capstone course in students’ senior year, including the production of a research paper and presentation that directly related to each student’s own interests.
Career
Studying History provides students with skills that open all sorts of career opportunities. Many Deree History students have continued their studies with graduate work in History or related disciplines, leading to careers as teachers, either in schools or universities. Others have joined the business world, working as human resource managers or for consulting companies. The skills of History majors are also appreciated in politics and diplomacy as well as in areas related to History, such as libraries or archives.
