Overview
Throughout this Psychology (Part-Time) (Hons) course from University of Gloucestershire you’ll have opportunities to examine topics such as what brain events occur during a phobic reaction, how to maintain psychological wellbeing, and why some people are psychopaths.
In your first year you’ll cover the core conceptual frameworks in psychology, how to investigate psychological questions, and ways that psychology can help us in everyday life. In your second and third years you’ll choose from a range of specialist topics – from psychology of forensics and wellbeing to gender, sexuality and cognitive neuroscience.
Students have recently investigated psychopathy and brain activity, psychological issues around eating disorders, animal therapy and motivations in physical exercise. You’ll use specialist facilities in our psychology laboratories, including electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment to measure brain activity, and virtual reality facilities to investigate how environments shape thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
Your work will be assessed in a variety of ways to develop career-relevant skills – including reports, presentations, blogs and portfolios, as well as traditional essays and exams. You’ll also have a chance to pursue a topic of personal interest for your research dissertation.
Career opportunities:
Preparing students for their future careers is something we are very passionate about, we provide employability-based opportunities and support through the degree. We have a “Professional Skills” module in year two, where you’ll undertake a project which advances your career-specific skills and knowledge. Students can also choose to complete a brief internship with an external organisation during year three, gaining additional work experience useful for your intended career.
Recent projects and internships have been completed with Sunflowers Suicide Support, Victim Support, SEND schools, and Headway Gloucestershire.
You’ll also undertake a final-year research project in an area of psychology that interests you and aligns with your career goals.
Graduates from this course can go on to work in various areas of psychology including forensic, clinical, occupational and health. Alternatively, you might consider a career in human resources, teaching or research.
