Students develop advanced communication skills while gaining deep insights into how various world languages impact both Canadian society and the international community.
This degree is delivered by the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, providing a supportive environment for academic excellence. The curriculum is designed to foster an international perspective, allowing students to master multiple languages while understanding the nuances of regional traditions and literary works.
Why Languages at the University of British Columbia?
Students benefit from exceptional experiential learning opportunities, including community events organised by the French Cultural Centre in Kelowna. The institution maintains study exchange agreements with thirteen universities in Central and South America, alongside seven partner institutions located across Spain.
Distinctive teaching features include the chance to apply for English-language teaching assistant roles in France for eight-month durations. Additionally, students can access the Canadian government’s five-week French-immersion bursary programme to study at various institutions across the country to enhance their fluency.
The faculty provides significant research support through undergraduate research awards valued at $2,500 for summer projects. In the final year, students may undertake directed studies, working closely with faculty members on substantive research assignments focused on specific areas of literature, culture, or linguistics.
