The Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering programme at the University of Cape Town aims to meet the demand for engineers with cross-disciplinary skills - generalists rather than specialists - particularly in the field of robotics, flexible manufacturing and electro-mechanical power systems. Some flexibility is allowed in the selection of courses so that students can tailor the degree to suit their interests and needs.

Careers

Most industries use forms of mechanical systems with electronic control parts of them. This makes mechanical & mechatronic engineering one of the most diverse of all engineering disciplines with careers in a wide range of sectors. These include management of people and resources, development and use of new materials and technologies, researching and developing medical products, improving production in old refineries and designing building services.

at least B in Mathematics at A-level AND either B in A-level Chemistry and a pass with at least B in IGCSE/O-level Physics; or B in A-level Physics and a pass with at least B in IGCSE/O-level Chemistry

at least C for IGCSE/O-level English; and

at least A for Mathematics and Physical Science and two B symbols at AS-level; or

without Physical Science: at least A for Mathematics; and A for either Physics or Chemistry; and B for the other (Physics or Chemistry), plus one other B symbol Namibian Senior Secondary Certificate (NSSC) at least four Higher level subjects with level 1 passes in Mathematics and Physical Science

International Baccalaureate

full IB Diploma with a Grade 6 pass at SL or a Grade 5 pass at HL for each of the subjects Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
