Description of the Program

The Fine Art program at Durban University of Technology is designed to develop your unique creative talent and understanding of the role art plays in the world through a variety of disciplines. These include:

Drawing

Painting

Sculpture

Print Making

Ceramics

Alongside these studio courses the study of Art Theory sets out to develop your understanding and familiarity with the traditions of art and the exciting and, at times, challenging contemporary scene. Courses in Entrepreneurial Studies and Professional Practice prepare you for entry into the world of the working artist whether as exhibiting artist, craftsperson, community art officer, gallery curator, designer or teacher. All students are provided with the opportunity to serve the community through practical community work where possible.

General requirements

The departmental selection panel, consisting of at least the Head of the Department of Fine Art and Jewellery Design and two members of staff, will evaluate the student’s potential to pursue a higher programme of study at the required academic level, taking into account:

An interview in which the student motivates for study at a higher level

The student’s results in Art Theory 3, and the Major Practical 3 subject in which they intend to specialize

A written proposal in the B Tech format in which the student outlines their proposed area of study

Evidence of a high standard of creativity and interest in art and an adequate level of written and spoken English is required. Art as a qualifying subject will be an advantage.

A portfolio of drawings comprising a still life, a portrait, a landscape and a free choice drawing. At the interview you will be required to complete a short visual-comprehension test.
