Japanese is the eighth largest language in the world, with almost 130 million native speakers. Knowledge of the Japanese language is essential for political, cultural and economic relations with Japan.

At the conclusion of Japanese Language and Culture programme at University of Iceland, the student shall be able to demonstrate knowledge, ability and skills, as listed below:
- Students have learned the language as language users and are acquainted with the studies regarding it (grammar, linguistics).
- Students have acquired an extensive knowledge of Japanese culture, history, literature and cinema.
- Students are able to express themselves relatively easily and interact with people who have Japanese as their mother tongue.
- Students are able to participate in discussions on familiar topics.

- Students know and are able to use the most common Japanese search engines, databanks, Internet resources and information websites.
