Overview
French is an important language in international affairs. Along with English and German, it is a procedural language (langue de travail) of the European Union and one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
Key features
At the conclusion of French Studies programme at University of Iceland, the student shall be able to demonstrate knowledge, ability and skills beyond that achieved at the previous level, as listed below:
- Students have a knowledge and understanding of the complexity of French as a language and the many cultures it reflects.
- Students are able to use their knowledge and understanding in scholarly pursuits or in their profession.
- Students possess the skills to find arguments for theoretical or practical solutions in the area of study.
- Students have adopted the language as language users and are acquainted with the studies regarding it (grammar, linguistics).
- Students are able to read and understand demanding and complicated texts of a variety of types and recognise their direct and indirect meanings.
- Students are able to express themselves fluently and without hindrance (without having to search for terms or expressions) and differentiate subtleties of meaning, even in complex contexts.
- Students are able to use the language effectively for social and academic purposes and in an occupational setting.
- Students are able to compose clear, detailed and well-structured texts on various issues.

General requirements
- Icelandic matriculation examination (stúdentspróf: school leaving examination from secondary school) or equivalent qualification. Students are required to have language proficiency at the A2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Every new student takes a placement test at the beginning of the semester.
