Overview
The bachelor’s programme in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (MIRT) from Fontys University of Applied Sciences is a 4-year, full-time programme. In these 4 years, you’ll learn how to use medical equipment in order to prepare, execute and process visual imaging research and treatment. You’ll be trained as the professional link between technology, safety and patient care.
The programme covers how the human body functions, which examination you can perform when presented with a clinical case, which equipment you should use for diagnoses or treatments and how these devices work. We’ll teach you the effects of radiation and radioactivity on the human body and how you can protect yourself and your patient against these effects.

You will learn to use medical equipment to prepare, perform and process imaging studies and treatments. You are a link between technology, safety and patient care. You will learn how the human body works, which examinations go with which disease, which equipment is needed and how this equipment works. You learn:-

Due to the technical nature of the course, it’s important that you’re sufficiently proficient in advanced mathematics and physics.
Career opportunities
The MIRT programme at Fontys University of Applied Sciences will prepare you for the profession of medical imaging and radiotherapy expert (diagnostic and therapeutic radiographer). Due to variation in the legislation and regulations of different countries concerning operating medical devices that deliver (ionising) radiation, additional work experience or other proof of skill could be required in your country of origin.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The first year serves as an orientation on the complete (4-year) programme and focuses on the responsibilities and tasks you’ll be performing as a Medical Imaging & Radiotherapy professional. Additionally, this year will give you the opportunity to find out whether this course is the right fit for you.
- In year 2, you’ll dig deeper into more complex diagnostic modalities and advanced medical imaging devices such as CT, MRI, SPECT. You’ll also learn how to make complex schedules and plans for radiation treatment.
- You’ll kick off year 3 by exploring the profile theme you chose in the second year. Half of this year will be spent on a 20-week internship at one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy workplaces. The other half of year 3 will be dedicated to a minor.
- Year 4 will be dedicated to completing another 20-week internship within one of the Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy arenas.

General requirements
- MIRT is an intensive study programme that has a focus on medical, technical and communication aspects. Subjects such as Anatomy, Pathology and Physiology all demand extensive knowledge.
- To be eligible to follow the course programme, there are no specific profile requirements, but knowledge of the subjects Mathematics (advanced) and Physics are recommended in all cases.
- You have to be competent in: mental arithmetic, algebra, rearranging formula’s, exponentials, converting units, trigonometry, reading and plotting graphs on logarithmic paper. When you don’t have these skills consider whether MIRT is the right study option for you.
- As a prospective student for the MIRT English Stream programme, you must have obtained a diploma of secondary general education or secondary vocational education equivalent to Dutch standards. The diploma and list of grades of your previous education will be evaluated to determine if you are admissible.
