Overview
Supporting other people can be a hugely rewarding process and by working in counselling, coaching or mentoring you may even have the potential to help someone to change their life.
If you have high emotional intelligence, and are good at understanding and relating to people, this Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring with Foundation Year course from Canterbury Christ Church University will help you to become effective and skilled in supporting others with achieving their aims and objectives, while developing yourself.
During the foundation year, you'll gain an introduction to counselling, coaching and mentoring, and you'll develop skills and confidence to prepare you to study at degree level.
Throughout the course, you'll integrate theory and practice, developing the skills, professional attributes and competences needed to work with others, often in challenging and difficult circumstances.
You'll develop your curiosity and critical reasoning abilities, as well as independent study and research skills. You'll also gain a solid grounding in a broad range of helping approaches and techniques, so that you can build effective relationships with clients in settings such as schools, the voluntary sector, human resources, social care and health.
On completion of the course, you may choose to continue your professional development through postgraduate studies and relevant accredited training in related fields such as psychotherapy, careers work, social work, human resources and other talking and creative therapies.
What you'll study
The foundation year will prepare to study at degree level by developing your academic study skills and confidence. You'll study introductory modules related to coaching, counselling and mentoring.
In Year 1, you'll gain a solid understanding of the requirements for building and maintaining relationships with clients in the one to one and group context. You'll explore a wide range of contexts by visiting work places and you'll gain real life insights from experts working in related professions.
As you progress through the course, you'll develop your skills in mentoring, coaching and counselling to an advanced level and you'll learn how to examine, analyse and critically evaluate a range of interpersonal and therapeutically informed strategies and interventions to support others.
By the end of the course you should have a firm grasp of key concepts and theories underpinning the disciplines of counselling, coaching and mentoring. You should also be able to demonstrate a sophisticated critical understanding of a range of professional practice issues and developments within the broad remit of the ‘helping professions’ and be able to apply a critical understanding of reflective and reflexive practice.
Your future career
Throughout your studies you will be encouraged to consider a range of future career pathways and the next steps needed to achieve this. On successful completion of your degree, you will have developed the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to enter a comprehensive range of roles within the helping professions, including employment options within health, education, human resources and management, social services and third sector organisations.
In addition, you may choose to continue your professional development through a range of postgraduate studies and where relevant accredited training, in related fields such as psychotherapy, careers work, social work, human resources and other talking and creative therapies.
