Overview
With concerns over health issues, physical activity and sport have become key requirements in everyone’s lifestyle. Policy makers at local and European levels, are actively promoting sport and physical activity – not only with the view of improving health and physical wellbeing, but also to enhance the role that sport can play in boosting social cohesion, for its educational value and for economic reasons. It is therefore crucial that a clear understanding of the value of sport is gained in order to determine ways of improving the services in this sector.
This B.Sc. in Sport and Physical Activity (Hons) at the University of Malta will surpass disciplinary limits in order to adopt a holistic approach to sport as a tool for development. Various components will be emphasized throughout the course with an emphasis on the development of the different personnel involved in sporting and physical activities. A particular emphasis on coaching and sport development responsibilities within the physical activity, sport and leisure sector will be made.
Career opportunities
- Graduates of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Sport and Physical Activity programme will be equipped with a sound grounding and an in-depth knowledge and skills of the different fields of sport and physical activity. They will also gain an understanding of the different core elements of the social, psychological, policy, legislative and managerial frameworks that are imperative in the sports field.
- Consequently, graduates will be in a position to join professionals in addressing the different challenging issues that arise in the sport world in relation to the constant changes that are happening in society. They will be able to bring innovative skills to the job both from the theoretical and practical point of view.
- Potential employers include the state sector, such as SportMalta, the private sector industry investing in sport and leisure, educational institutions, and the voluntary sector including sport organisations.
- Graduates of this programme will have the option of pursuing other courses at a higher level either offered by the University of Malta or overseas.

General requirements
- Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better or at SEC Level 3 in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.
All applicants shall:
- submit a medical fitness certificate, as per prescribed form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport, dated not earlier than two months prior to the submission of the application
- submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police and
- submit documented evidence pertaining to any relevant experience listed on the appropriate form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport.
