Key facts:

The Library and Information Sciences at the Panjab University was redesignated as Bachelor of Library Science from the academic session 1968-69 and as Bachelor of Library & Information Science (1 Year Course) from the academic session 1988-89. The University instituted the Master of Library Science (1 Year Course) from the academic session 1970-71, which was re-designated as Master of Library & Information Science from the academic session 1988-89.
The Department has reverted back to offering Bachelor of Library & Information Sciences (1 Year Course) and Master of Library & Information Sciences (1 Year course). Ph.D. in Library Science was introduced from the academic session 1972-73, which was also redesignated as Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the academic session 1988-89.
The Department offers Bachelor's and Master's in Library & Information Science along with Ph.D. programme. The programmes are based on the practices and underlying theories of information acquisition, organization, dissemination and utilization. On completion of the courses, the students demonstrate the values, attitudes, and behaviours associated with the roles and responsibilities of information and library professionals in accordance with the market oriented employment.

General requirements

Wherever for admission, Bachelor’s Degree is the minimum requirement, it shall mean the first degree obtained under 10+2+3 scheme. The first degree obtained under the old scheme (14-year course) till April, 1995 will be treated at par with the first degree under 10+2+3 scheme for the purpose of admission to these courses.
Every candidate must apply for the Reserved / Additional Category(ies) to which he/she belongs to in the Admission Form. All candidates will be considered in the General Category irrespective of the fact that they have claimed for admission under Reserved/ Additional Categories. No candidate shall be considered for admission against any Reserved Category (ies) for which he/she has not applied. (As per Important dates at Page No. 21-22).
All information relating to admission shall be uploaded on the Online Notice Board of the concerned department as well as on the Physical Notice Board.
