Overview
The English Language and Literature Studies (Honours) programme from University Sains Malaysia aims to produce graduates who possess effective communication, leadership and innovative skills to reach excellence at the international level through an efficient dissemination of knowledge, cultivation of quality which emphasizes academic and professional excellence, holistic individual development and strong commitment towards local and international communities’ aspiration.
Educational Objectives:
To produce graduates who are:
- Competent and knowledgeable in the English language and about the teaching and learning of English.
- Knowledgeable in linguistics as a field of study (such as phonetics and phonology, semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis etc).
- Equipped with relevant literary skills in order to be able to appreciate, analyse, discuss and evaluate various types of literary texts and discourses.
- Knowledgeable in various types of English (that is genre, register, dialect) as part of language development for teachers.
- Equipped with relevant generic skills (that is communication skills, problem-solving skills, IT skills, study skills, team working, time management, interpersonal skills), critical and creative thinking and intellectual skills (to synthesise, analyse, and evaluate information and ideas).
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the programmes, graduates will:- exhibit skills and knowledge (linguistics and language) and critical thinking in discussing various types of written genres and literary texts.
- have the skills to manage information effectively through their ability to read and interpret texts.
- be able to communicate using their knowledge of the English sound system and have the skill to write reports, memos, business letters and literary reviews in the English language.
- exhibit entrepreneurial and management skills.
- exhibit scientific and thinking skills in information processing and problem solving.
- use software/linguistic tools to analyse linguistic data.
- have the relevant pragmatic skills and knowledge of the English language to communicate with courtesy in the community.
- demonstrate professionalism and good ethics through positive values and good work culture.
- exhibit leadership qualities in group work activities, information management and problem solutions.

- Completed 12 years of Primary and High School Education and
- Obtained High School Certificate (eg. A-Level, HSC, SMU, & UAN (Indonesia), Matayom Suksa 6 (Thailand), International Baccalaureate etc.) or
- Diploma in the related field
- Official certificates, transcripts, mark sheets or school report from each secondary or college attended
- Translated copy of certificates (if issued other than English or Malay Language)
- IELTS/TOEFL/MUET/CAE/CPE/PTE/Authorization Letter from an institution in which the medium instruction is English
- Copy of passport (Details page only in A4 size)
