The Industrial, Organisational and Labour Studies degree at University of Kwazulu Natal explores the relationship between these changes and the broader economy, livelihood strategies, and other social institutions and movements.

By doing courses in labour studies you will become familiar with foundational concepts such as work, capitalism, class, gender, race, market, state, organisations and institutions. Exposed to contemporary developments and debates in the field you will understand the broader historical context behind the current issues.

You will need to read widely and learn to write critically and with purpose.

Programme Structure

As a teaching programme we offer IOLS as a major subject in the BSoc Sci or BA degree; or graduate honours, masters and PhD degrees.

This inter-disciplinary programme, together with related modules, provides a solid foundation that prepares students for a range of options that demand an understanding of a central aspect of our lives, namely work and what goes along with it: human resources, organisational forms and functions, industrial relations, technological change, employment and unemployment, global links and inequalities, industrial policy, conflict and democracy and so on.

Applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of a National Senior Certificate for Degree Studies (NSC-Deg) or a Senior Certificate with endorsement.

The medium of instruction at UKZN is English, and UKZN requires a pass in English (Home Language or First Additional Language (FAL)) at Level 4 (50% or above) but note that the College of Law requires a pass in English Home language at Level 5 or English as FAL on Level 6.

UKZN degree programmes require a pass in Life orientation at Level 4.
