Overview
About the programme
The Dual Degree Programme of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER) is a unique training programme and offers to the selected candidates a balanced schedule of class room lessons, project and research works.
While the Institute aims to comprehensively train the students in each of the major subjects, much attention is also directed to the development of the inter-disciplinary skills.
The broad outline of the training programme is as follows:
- In the first year, all students are introduced to basic sciences, viz., Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical and Earth Sciences. In the second year, the students select three pre-major subjects from the above mentioned disciplines.
- In the third and fourth years, students choose a major subject from the above disciplines and need to take optional interdisciplinary courses.
- The fifth year almost completely devoted to full time research/technical project/specialized training in which the students need to prepare a dissertation. At the end of the fifth year, both Bachelor and Masters degrees are awarded to successful candidates.

General requirements
Candidates will be admitted to IISER only through following three channels.
- (1) Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) channel
- (2) Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advanced) of the Indian Institutes of Technology
- (3) State and Central Boards Channel (SCB)
These channels will be referred to as KVPY, JEE, and SCB, respectively.
In view of the current uncertainties in the board examinations it has been decided that the eligibility criterion for admission to IISERs this year will stand at 60% (or equivalent) at the +2 level for General candidates and at 55% for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy) candidates for all eligible boards. Students whose board examination results are not available at the time of the IAT will be allowed to appear in the examination. Their admission to an IISER, if selected, will be subject to their attaining the above eligibility criterion.Student insurance
