Overview
The BSc. course on Materials Engineering from Universidade Nova de Lisboa is ffers the students the opportunity to learn the important mutual influences involving materials’ Structure, Properties, Processing and Applications.
By the end of course, the student should:
- Thoroughly understand the links between the structure and the properties of the different classes of materials
- Know the most relevant materials characterization techniques
- Adequately use the relevant characterization techniques to solve concrete industrial problems
- Be familiar with the most relevant materials processing technologies
- Know and use within its proper context the relevant mathematical, physical, chemical or informatics language and concepts indispensable to acquire technical competences
- Communicate efficiently within an academic and professional context
- Be familiar with corporate organizational templates
Careers
First and foremost, the Undergraduate Course in Materials Engineering is the ideal preparation for more advanced studies in any engineering specialty, particularly in Materials Engineering.
Training in Materials Engineering was launched at the NOVA School of Science and Technology in 1981. Since then, the demand for Material Engineers has increased significantly, as a reflex of a highly technological training that enables the Materials Engineering graduates to successfully exercise a profession.
The main sectors of activity of the graduates are as follows: 11% Extractive industry; 22% Services and Consulting; 23% Manufacturing; 44% Education/Teaching

- Students are admitted to FCT NOVA, through the National Admission and Enrolment System for Higher Education, and register at the Academic Services, within the period set by ministerial dispatch;
- 60% of the final grade obtained in secondary school;
- 40% of the final grade of the specific(s) exam(s);
- Identification document (e.g, passport), mentioning the candidate's nationality;
- Document proving the candidate's current adress;
- Teaching / training diplomas / certificates, namely the qualification that gives access to higher education in the country of origin, with grades and final average;
- Statement on how the candidate complies with the international student status;
- Document confirming payment of the application fee.
