Overview
Studying Literature and Society, you'll develop a critical, sharp view on literature and its relevance to social and cultural developments. Literature is a broad concept and varies from the first written texts to the last spoken word performance. As a student you are not just reading: of course, you love literature, but your interests are broad. You’re interested in culture and social issues and also enjoy writing yourself.
Start your career
There are many opportunities for graduates from the Literature and Society programme offered at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, but most of our students continue to pursue careers that allow them to think critically and challenge social norms. Within the academic world, our graduates become high-school teachers or university professors. In the literary world, they work in publishing houses, organise literary events, edit journals or in some other way contribute to the written word. Some students also become researchers for ministries or non-profit organisations. Whatever you choose, VU's career orientation course is here to help you take the next step.
