Overview

Study biochemistry, and it will open your eyes to a new world.

We look closer at how living things are made, and how to harness that knowledge to tackle major global challenges. Biochemistry is at the heart of medicine and vaccine development, new foods and fuels, and insights into how we can resist disease and address climate change.

Our BSc course will introduce you to amazing insights into how humans, plants and other organisms work at a molecular level. You’ll be taught the fundamentals of biochemistry, but also challenged to explore how it is applied to deliver breakthroughs in different fields.

Everything we do is designed to prepare you for an exciting career dealing with real problems, such as those laid on in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. You’ll build confidence in the lab, gathering and critically evaluating experimental data in teams and independently. You’ll also get the chance to develop career experience, with a placement at the end of your second year.

Each of our students has the chance to think deeper about how biochemistry can re-shape the world. You’ll be encouraged to think about your own ideas and develop your own assumptions, and you’ll finish with a large research project on a topic of your choice. This could be lab-based, or include elements of business, critical analysis or data analysis.

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) for the purpose of meeting in part the academic and experience requirement for the Membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).
