Overview

The Mental Health Nursing (Hons) programme from University of Malta  has been developed to meet the nursing needs of the increasing population of people with mental health problems. It aims to prepare graduates to become dynamic, reflective and highly skilled professionals able to work as fully integrated members of the psychiatric multi-disciplinary team. 

The main focus of mental health nursing’s responsibilities is working with people and the course offers opportunities for personal growth, interpersonal skills development and the foundations of evidence based interventions to enable them to do so as self directed practitioners.

Career opportunities and access to further studies

On successful completion of the programme, the candidate would be eligible for employment as a first level registered psychiatric nurse in Malta and in several other EU member states. 

Nurses are nowadays expected to continue to develop on a personal and professional level, through lifelong learning. Post-registration educational opportunities for professional development are available, such as specializing programmes and Masters graduate programmes and EU exchange activities.Graduate psychiatric nurses work in a variety of health care settings, such as the community and specialist care setting, and engage in a variety of roles, such as management and policy development, research and the psychiatric nursing development unit. Employment opportunities for this professional group are very good.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements:

  • A pass at Grade C or better in Biology at Intermediate Level, or a pass at Advanced Level in Biology
