Overview
The Social Sciences, Sustainable Urban Development programme from Tampere University includes basic and intermediate studies in each of the fields. Knowledge of these fields will help you understand the complex phenomena related to sustainable urban development from several perspectives. In addition to the studies that are common for all students, the programme includes specializations studies, which develop the theoretical basis of the selected study field and for creating a professional profile.
Bachelor’s Programme in Sustainable Urban Development offers you a way to develop multidisciplinary expertise related to urban development and sustainability. This multidisciplinary programme consists of three specialisations: Administrative Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology.
In addition to multidisciplinarity, a unique aspect of this programme is the style of learning. Each year the students are engaged in real-life urban development projects. These projects are carried out in collaboration with companies and public organizations such as the City of Tampere. For example, we utilize a real-world laboratory, Hiedanranta, which is a future city district and a testbed for innovative projects related to smart and sustainable housing, energy, transportation and business.
Career opportunities:
- Graduates of the Bachelor’s programmes will obtain strong multidisciplinary skills and they will be well experienced to work in a multicultural environment. The programmes prepares the graduates to be professionals in matters related to the sustainable urban development, area that is growing and in demand.
- The Master’s programme aims at improving students' academic credentials and in enhancing their career prospects as highly qualified analysts and applied researchers in national, European and international organisations.
- Graduates are expected to work in the areas of welfare management and social policy development and they will be able to apply their skills in creating, developing and evaluating social programmes and projects.

You can apply for admission if you have completed or will complete one of the following qualifications
- the Finnish matriculation examination
- the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, the European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma, the Reifeprüfung (RP) diploma, the Deutsches Internationales Abitur (DIA) diploma, or the Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE)
- vocational upper secondary qualifications, a vocational degree or a specialised vocational degree as referred to in the Finnish Vocational Education and Training Act (531/2017)
- foreign qualifications which in the awarding country confer eligibility to pursue an equivalent university degree
Or:
- you have been granted a study right for a university degree in Finland
- you hold a degree conferred by a Finnish higher education institution or a degree conferred by a foreign institution that is equivalent at least to a bachelor’s degree
