Overview
The focus of the East Asian Art History programme at the Heidelberg University as a minor, within the framework of a degree programme in East Asian Studies, is a practice-oriented combination of linguistic and art-historical competencies. This is accomplished by means of an interdisciplinary approach to subject knowledge and career-oriented skills, including intercultural competence and the routine use of modern media.
In their major subject – East Asian Studies with a specialisation in either Chinese Studies or Japanese Studies – students will acquire the necessary language skills and competency in East Asian topics within a basic historical-art historical-cultural context and, through attending courses in text and image analysis, will acquire cross-disciplinary competencies.
Key Features
- By introducing students to the entire range of East Asian archaeology, art, and architecture through examples studied during the course of three preparatory courses, the minor in East Asian Art History provides a focus on the theoretical-methodological and material fundamentals of the academic discipline of East Asian Art History.
Programme Structure
- The lectures on specific topics provide both an expanded perspective on new findings on interrelationships between East Asian art history, art, and art history as well as a more in-depth analysis of individual works, artefacts, and academic argumentation.
- The main seminar in East Asian Art History is intended to allow students to make use of the fundamentals that have been learned and the methodology that has been practised in independently, or with limited guidance, preparing a topic and then giving a verbally convincing presentation as well as providing an error-free written paper.
- This degree programme also includes practice-oriented training and direct observation of actual objects.
