Overview
In this History and Philosophy (Hons) programme from University of Dundee , we teach social, cultural, and political history from the early modern period through to the contemporary period, focusing in particular on the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and India.
You'll use primary sources from the start, analysing various kinds of historical evidence, including written and oral materials, maps, visual images, feature films, art, and music. You'll consider how the use of sources and media representation inform our reconstructions of the past.
At Levels 1 and 2 you will receive a grounding in ancient and modern philosophy and be introduced to fundamental ideas concerning ethics, epistemology (the nature of knowledge) and metaphysics (the nature of reality).
You then specialise in Levels 3 and 4 by drawing on a range of philosophy modules taught by lecturers engaging in interdisciplinary research.
Careers and opportunities
The course is designed to produce confident, intellectually engaged graduates, who can think creatively and independently, ask incisive questions, articulate their ideas, and solve complex problems. These are all attributes highly sought after by employers.
The history graduates go on to work in industries such as the media, the heritage industry, museums and archives, teaching, politics, the civil service, business, finance, and the diplomatic service.
A philosophy degree gives you the ability to identify and explain the underlying issues in all kinds of debates. You will also learn to identify arguments from varied sources and traditions and offer clear responses to these arguments. You can summarise points of view which are not your own and will learn the self-discipline required for independent research.
