They can enrich the repertory of musical knowledge with their sophisticated musical taste and are able to work in musical institutions, professional performing ensembles, religious ensembles and in other occupations which require musical education.

With their high standard of knowledge, they can continue their studies in one of the MA specializations.
Specialized fields: music theory and musicology

Main subjects

Basic knowledge: philosophy, aesthetics, ethics, studies of history of culture and art, general and Hungarian history of music, folk music, studies of works of music, acoustics.

General technical knowledge and skills according to specialization: theory of music, solfeggio, counterpoint, piano, score reading, transposing, chamber music/singing, contemporary music, orchestral/choir practice, music pedagogy, history of music education.

Differentiated technical knowledge: Specialization in theory of music: harmony of higher level, studies of counterpoint and musical form, stylistic studies, history of theory of music, high standard of score reading skills, continuo playing.

Specialization in musicology: harmony of higher level, studies of counterpoint and musical form, folk music and history of music, stylistic studies, high standard of score reading and musical hearing skills, voice training, choir conducting, Kodály's music pedagogy, spreading musical knowledge

Programme Structure

Objectives and Perspectives

To educate musicians who - with their performing skills, theoretical knowledge, and highly developed musical abilities - enrich and spread Hungarian and European music culture. They can enrich the repertory of musical knowledge with their sophisticated musical taste and are able to work in musical institutions, professional performing ensembles, religious ensembles and in other occupations which require musical education. With their high standard of knowledge, they can continue their studies in one of the MA specializations.

To enter into the education:

The applicants take part in an entrance audition, where they demonstrate their musical talent and knowledge. The committee of professors decides giving the possibility to take part in the education program.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 5.5

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score: 513

    The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading).   • Minimum required score: 65

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Academic: one or more of the following :

  • - excellent (senior) high school graduation grades for relevant subjects
  • - completed A Levels, IB or an internationally-recognized Foundation Year program with relevant subjects
  • - completed the first year of an HND or Advanced Diploma related to the relevant program
  • - in the first year of study on a relevant undergraduate degree

Age: students are at least 18 years old
English Language Level: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 513 (183 computer based test, 65 internet based test), Pearson test of English (PTE) 46-48, or equivalent; GCE “O’”level English grade C
