The modern languages programmes are some of the broadest in the UK. Study one or two languages (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish) and develop these to a high level. Complement your business management and language study with modules from an incredibly extensive and diverse selection of areas, such as literature, history, film, politics, society, translation and so on. Develop advanced language skills and a deep cultural understanding through true immersion on your Year Abroad.

Support
You will have access to a comprehensive support system to help you make the transition to Higher Education.
- Personal tutors - You will be assigned your own personal tutor who will get to know you as you progress through your studies. They will provide academic support and welfare advice to enable you to make the most of your time here at Birmingham.
- Transition review - you will undergo a formal transition review during your first year with an academic member of staff. They will see how you are getting on and if there are particular areas where you need support.
- Academic Skills Centre - the centre aims to help you become a more effective and independent learner through a range of high-quality support services. The centre offers workshops on a range of topics, such as note-taking, reading, academic writing and presentation skills.
- Academic Writing Advisory Service (AWAS) - the AWAS team will provide guidance on writing essays and dissertations at University-level. You will receive individual support from an academic writing advisor and meet with postgraduate tutors who specialise in particular subjects. Support is given in a variety of ways, such as small-group workshops, online activities, tutorials and email correspondence.
- Student experience - our Student Experience Team will help you get the most out of your academic experience. They will offer research opportunities, study skills support and help you prepare for your post-university careers. They will also organise social events, such as field trips, to help you meet fellow students from your course.
Language laboratory sessions allow you to practise your listening and spoken skills and are an essential part of all our language programmes.

The small print.
The degree programme is four years in length, and you will spend your third year abroad studying, teaching or working abroad before returning to Birmingham for your final year. Depending upon your chosen language(s), you may have the opportunity to participate in a subsidised one week escorted European Cultural Tour to a city in the country of your target language, or a subsidised trip to the city of Petrozavodsk in western Russia for an intensive four-week language programme from beginners in Russian.
Birmingham Business School is dynamic and internationally focused. We were the country’s first dedicated business school and we have strong links with local, national and global businesses such as Deloitte, KPMG, PwC and Ernst & Young. As a result, our degree programmes retain a strong practical focus as well as exploring theoretical aspects.

Please note that for reasons of timetabling it is not possible to combine Spanish with Russian, Italian with Portuguese, Italian with Mandarin Chinese, nor Portuguese with Mandarin Chinese. All languages except French can be studied from beginner’s level.
