Overview
The Latin (Classical Philology) degree programme at the Heidelberg University focuses on the study of surviving ancient texts in the Latin language. Students in the degree programme will gain skills in effectively translating and authoring texts in Latin and will learn fundamental theoretical positions and methods of literature in general as well as the most important theories of linguistics. They will also gain an overview of the history of the Latin language and its literature.
Key Features
On the basis of this well-founded knowledge of both the history of literature as well as fundamental theories and methods, students will learn to effectively describe and interpret Latin texts and to develop their own research inquiries.
An essential element in this is the continual reflection on the relevance of engaging with Latin language texts and the Latin culture. This reflection enables students to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue with representatives from related disciplines and to make clear to those in other subject areas (including non-scientists) the relevance of Latin Studies.
During the course of studies, students will also gain the ability to perform independent work and to develop strategies for resolving research questions. In addition, they will hone their critical judgement skills and will learn to objectively formulate their own criticism as well as to constructively deal with external criticism of their own positions.Programme Structure
