Overview

The Honours Chinese programme at the Stellenbosch University consists of two modules. Module one aims to enhance the learners’ language skills and knowledge of the target language and culture. In addition, an immersion programme is part of Module one, in which learners will attend an intensive course at the designated university in China and experience the culture and life style of the Chinese people. In Module two students are expected to complete a mini-thesis of their own chosen topic related to their Chinese studies.

What we offer

The one module consists of different topics in Chinese language, literature and culture presented in weekly seminars. During seminars, you submit assignments and do oral presentations on specific topics. The other module comprises an independent research project for which you must do your own research. You will be given the opportunity to attend an intensive three-month course at a Chinese university.

After completing successfully the Honours programme in Chinese, students will be able to:

• communicate effectively in Chinese both orally and in written form;

• show a deep understanding in the target language and culture;

• demonstrate the general knowledge of cross-cultural communication;

• conduct a research project independently.
