Overview
About the course
The Tourism programme at University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland is taught in German, French and English. Students can select modules in a combination of languages, and if they obtain enough credits in modules taught in French and German they are awarded a bilingual degree. Students are strongly encouraged to go on an exchange abroad in the second year of their studies.
Tourism is an industry requiring a multitude of skills. Students will deepen their skills in 13 key areas: tourism, economics and finance, marketing, digitalisation, management, communications, leadership, entrepreneurship, languages, cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, sustainability, and socio-politics. They will also learn to combine these skills through a multidisciplinary approach.
To start with, students focus on the fundamental principles of tourism, which are then linked together through integrative modules. There is a strong focus on applying these skills in practice through close collaboration with businesses. Students also get to work with the HES-SO Institute of Tourism, which manages tourism-related research and other projects.
In the final two semesters, students can hone their skills in a specific area with year- and semester-long electives in areas such as event creation, entrepreneurship and tourist package development. Students can also specialise in other areas relating to the tourism sector and/or develop their soft skills (e.g., leadership).
