Overview
The training activities at Civil and Environmental Engineering for Sustainable Development from Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, also taught in English, include the acquisition of up-to-date techniques, methodologies, and tools. These will enable both professional collaboration with those involved in the design, construction, management, and maintenance of civil construction, and the acquisition of the basic cognitive tools for continuous updating of their knowledge.
The specific educational objectives are as follows:
- knowledge of the basic notions of geometry, mathematical analysis, rational mechanics, chemistry and physics useful for the description and interpretation of problems related to civil and environmental engineering;
- ability to use appropriate mathematical tools for modeling and solving problems arising from applied sciences;
- ability to transform a physical problem into a mathematical problem and to physically interpret the result;
- knowledge of the structure of matter, basic chemical processes, materials, thermodynamics and civil energetics, the fundamentals of descriptive geometry and graphical representation methodologies;
- knowledge of the laws governing the behavior of fluids at rest or in motion;
- knowledge of the laws governing the mechanical behavior of continuous solid and porous media;
- knowledge of engineering disciplines in the field of civil works (structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, maritime, infrastructure and transport systems, sustainable construction, works for the production of electricity from renewable sources), environmental (planning, design and management of soil defense and environmental protection interventions, including related plants/systems/structures) and safety (plants and construction sites, civil defense, protection from natural risks) that allow the performance of design activities such as the sizing of simple structures, the hydraulic calculation of canals and conduits, the sizing of simple geotechnical works, the sizing of maritime works and coastal protection of limited importance, the design of simple road infrastructures, the sizing of ordinary hydraulic and health-environmental works, sustainable infrastructures.
Career opportunities
The main career opportunities are in professional firms and design companies for civil works, systems, and infrastructure, as well as in construction and maintenance companies for civil works, systems, and infrastructure. Further career opportunities are expected in public offices specializing in the design, planning, management, and control of urban and territorial systems, in companies, organizations, consortia, and agencies managing and controlling systems of works and services, and in manufacturing companies of all kinds.Programme Structure
