Overview
The BA in Visual Arts, delivered at the NABA Milan campus and NABA Rome campus, combines artistic research with sustained practical work. Students develop an independent artistic practice while examining how contemporary art engages with the world around it. They work with painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video, sound, performance and installation to investigate ideas, create artworks and consider how audiences experience them.
After the first year, students choose one of two specialisations:
Painting: Students deepen their practice through sustained work with painting, drawing on its techniques and history while exploring its expressive possibilities within contemporary art.
Visual Arts: Students work across different media and experiment with methods of production and display, examining how an artwork’s form and exhibition context shape its meaning.
Throughout both specialisations, students pursue their own artistic research and develop a body of work that they can present and discuss with confidence. The programme awards 180 CFA and leads to a First Level Academic Degree in Painting and Visual Arts.
Career opportunities include:

Roles in curatorial support
Roles in cultural events

Accreditation
NABA’s Bachelor of Arts qualifications are recognised by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), have full legal status and are equivalent to the corresponding university degrees. The academic credits awarded can support progression to further study at academies and universities in Italy and abroad, subject to each institution’s admission requirements.
Programme Structure
The BA in Visual Arts combines theory, projects and experimentation. After the first year, students choose Painting or Visual Arts as their specialisation. Specialist and elective modules support an individual approach.
- First year: Students explore contemporary art through drawing, painting, photography and other visual languages. Subjects include artistic anatomy, modern art history, painting techniques and contemporary practice. Meetings with art professionals introduce the wider field.
- Second year: Students deepen their pathway through contemporary art history, painting, sculpture, public art and video installation. Projects connect ideas, materials, form and presentation.
- Third year: Students pursue independent research into making and exhibiting art, from concept to finished work. Visual arts, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and cultural anthropology support their practice and a final thesis combining theory and practice.
Audience
This course is aimed at students who want to develop their own artistic practice and explore different ways of making and presenting art. It suits those interested in both creative experimentation and the ideas, contexts and professional work surrounding contemporary art.
