Overview
English Language and Culture allows you to explore the English language in all its richness and complexity, tracing its development across centuries. Alongside your language and linguistic studies, you immerse yourself in the culture and literature of Great Britain and other English-speaking regions around the world. You study the classics of high and popular culture - Shakespeare, Stevenson, Downton Abbey, Little Britain, and much more. To become an expert in the field of English language, linguistics and culture, you will also immerse yourself in the cusyoms and social relations of English-speaking communities.
English Language and Culture has two tracks: English Language and Culture and American Studies. If your interest lies specifically in American Studies, please check our dedicated American Studies programme.

Year 1
Introduction to the main aspects of the academic study of English language and culture (including literature, history, politics and linguistics) and English language proficiency training. You will learn to critically read English literary texts, and to apply methodologies needed to analyse literary texts in an academic context and critically approach the history of Great Britain.
Year 2
You will deepen and broaden the knowledge acquired in your first year. Your English fluency will continue to improve, as will your understanding of language structure, the linguistic diversity of English and its spread across the globe as a world language. You will expand and deepen your understanding of the most important works, genres and traditions in English literature. You will also follow elective courses this year.
Year 3
You will follow compulsory and elective courses and write your Bachelor's thesis.

Your foreign diploma must be equivalent to a Dutch high school (VWO) diploma or a higher-level diploma, such as, but not limited to the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate, German Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife and British GCE-A Level.
