Overview
The courses taught at the Mathematics program of the National University of Sciences and Technology are aimed at providing the students with a wide mathematical background. These courses increase the prospects for students for higher education with international standards.
Our BS Mathematics degree opens several exciting and lucrative avenues. Graduates are not only able to pursue careers in higher education and research as MS. and PhD. scholars, but also get the skills that are needed in modern industrial and financial markets. Globally, mathematicians are employed in banks, stock markets, consultation firms and fields related to circuit design, cryptography, data mining and computing. Holding a BS Mathematics degree from SNS will ensure that the graduates are well prepared for a wide variety of jobs available in Pakistan and abroad.
BS Mathematics students at SNS attend courses from a range of mathematics: from computational fluid dynamics and numerical analysis on the computational side, to logic, topology and functional analysis on the pure side. In addition, students take courses from natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. One of the strong points of the curriculum offered here at SNS is the large number of elective courses that students can take. From Semester VII, students will have the option to join one of the following streams:
Computational Mathematics
Those students who have keen interest in learning numerical analysis can opt for this stream. Elective courses will be offered which covers the methodology behind the numerics enabling students to find numerical solutions of ODEs and PDEs, implementation of numerical algorithms in different software like MATLAB etc., learning efficient algorithms in linear algebra and introduction to the solvers for fluid dynamics. Other than aforementioned topics mathematical modeling and nonlinear phenomena will also be a part of this scheme. In Semesters VII and VIII, the department will offer four courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.
Pure and Applied Mathematics
This stream is a blend of pure and applied mathematics courses. Students who have interest in pure and applied mathematics may choose this stream. In Semester VII and VIII, the department will offer four courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.
Mathematical Economics
Students who have a strong interest in economics and mathematics may opt this stream. This stream will provide strong foundations in both mathematics and economics and will offer the students both the intellectual and the quantitative skills to grapple with questions at the interface of these two disciplines. In Semester VII and VIII, the department will offer four courses from the list of elective courses for this stream.
Associated Careers:
Mathematics graduates in Pakistan traditionally pursue careers in education and research centers or go on for higher studies.
Our BS Program not only keeps the requirement of these fields in mind but also equips students with skills that are needed in the modern industrial and financial markets. All over the developed world, mathematicians are employed by banks, stock exchanges, lending agencies and most other industries. SNS is acutely aware that we are a rapidly developing nation and our institutions require expert mathematicians to fulfil their needs on an urgent basis. This broadens the scope of the graduates of this program and enables them to choose from a wide variety of jobs available in Pakistan and abroad, particularly in the areas mentioned above.
