Overview

Upon completion of study, students in the Mechanical Engineering (Honours) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University are expected to:

  • Learn to apply scientific principles, carry out engineering analysis and design to solve challenging problems that are typical in mechanical engineering;
  • Be able to use computers as tools to solve engineering problems;
  • Develop the ability to formulate technical problems mathematically and analyze engineering systems;
  • Be equipped with the ability to properly select the most suitable materials and methods that are safe, environmentally and aesthetically acceptable, and economically competitive for systems/products and their design and manufacture;
  • Build up the skills needed to think innovatively and creatively, to communicate effectively both in oral and written form; and
  • Appreciate the ethical and societal responsibilities of engineers, the importance of lifelong learning, concepts of continuous quality improvement and the continued effect of the globalization of the design, manufacturing and marketing of technical goods and services.

Career

Because of their broad and solid knowledge in engineering and sciences, and their ability to apply knowledge and skills to tackle complicated multidisciplinary engineering problems, our graduates are able to start their careers as mechanical engineers, design engineers, manufacturing and process engineers, service engineers, consultant engineers or project engineers. 

They find excellent employment opportunities in the aviation and aeronautical engineering industries, public utility companies, building services sector, engineering consultancy firms, construction industry, environmental, electronic and manufacturing industries, information technology sector, government departments and educational institutions.

Programme Structure

Students can choose Elective Subjects in the following technical streams:

  • Aerospace Engineering;
  • Design and Automation; and
  • Environmental and Energy Engineering.

General Requirements

A High School (Graduation) Diploma and any one of the following:

  • ACT: Composite score of 24
  • AP: Grade 3 in 2 AP subjects
  • Redesigned SAT: Total score of 1190
  • SAT: Combined score of 1650, with a sub-score of 8 in essay writing
  • GCE A-level/International A-level: Passes in 3 AL subjects/2 AL and 2 AS subjects
  • IB: A minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level subjects
