Overview
Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
The Electrical Engineering (Honours) programme of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University aims to produce engineers who practise in the broad area of electrical engineering, which includes electrical power systems, energy conversion and utilisation, transportation systems, environmental protection, control, computer and fibre-optic applications.
A modern electrical engineer should possess a broad-based education and adequate specialist knowledge to undertake high-level work in design, planning, supervision and manufacturing. The programme thus emphasizes the mastery of fundamental principles and application of the latest engineering technology. Of equal importance is the training of leadership, entrepreneurship, and communication skills.
Programme Characteristics
This programme is a major electrical engineering degree programme in Hong Kong, and provides a unique and up-to-date education in the interesting field of electrical power and energy.
The curriculum is designed to give a balanced treatment of university core requirements, electrical engineering fundamentals, advanced and specialist topics, and non-technical subjects such as economics and management.
Students also develop good presentation and problem-solving skills through mini-projects and final-year projects. Students are required to take the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) component, which may be in the form of summer training or an industrial attachment.
Students can also participate in exchange programmes and spend a semester at an overseas university. Every year, a number of students participate in exchange programmes with institutions including the Cardiff University, the National University of Singapore, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the Technical University of Munich and Czech Technical University.
Seminars, industrial visits and overseas study tours are also organized to broaden students' horizons.
Career Prospects
Our graduates have numerous employment opportunities in engineering planning and design, manufacturing, installation, maintenance and servicing, engineering sales and research.
Graduates are able to develop rewarding careers in major utility and transportation companies such as CLP Power Hong Kong Limited, the Hongkong Electric Company and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation. They are also employed by engineering consultant firms, contractor companies, international engineering enterprises, electrical product manufacturers, and the Government of the HKSAR (e.g. the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, the Water Supplies Department, the Drainage Department and others).
Programme Structure
- The Year 1 curriculum focuses on fundamental students, such as physics, mathematics, languages, information technology and general education.
- The Year 2 curriculum focuses on the fundamentals of engineering science, engineering mathematics, computing and introductory electrical engineering.
- In Year 3, students follow a semi-structured study pattern by taking compulsory core subjects in electrical engineering and Elective Subjects. The focus is on consolidating the fundamentals, teamwork and experimental methods. Discipline-specific language subjects are also studied.
- Students take advanced Core Subjects and Elective Subjects and carry out final-year projects. Final-year projects provide a comprehensive learning experience in engineering technology, problem-solving techniques, communication skills (both written and verbal) and creative thinking.
