Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
In addition to knowledge of environmental and transportation engineering, and management, economics, sustainable urban development and public policy are adequately covered in this programme.
Graduates of the Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Development (Honours) programme of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will be able to devise practical solutions to environmental and transportation problems as well as to contribute to policy formulation which will lead to sustainable development.
Programme Characteristics

- Four-year full-time comprehensive programme with a wide range of Core and Elective Subjects;
- Opportunity to study abroad for one to two semesters in subsidized exchange programmes at internationally famed universities;
- Summer placement in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland or overseas between the third and fourth years of the programme;
- Scholarships available for students with excellent academic performances; and
- Lessons from leading environmental and tranportation engineers and sustainable development professionals in the region.

Our graduates are ready for employment as environmental and transportation engineers and sustainable development professionals in both the public and private sectors with good career prospect, such as civil servants, managers, analysts, and environmental consultants.
Programme Structure
- The Year 1 common curriculum covers basic knowledge and latest issues in the field of civil engineering and sustainable development.
- The Year 2 and 3 curriculum covers comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge in environmental engineering, sustainable development, occupational safety and health.
- The Year 4 curriculum offers a wide range of advanced elective subjects that enable students to gain in-depth exposure to fields of particular interest to them. In addition, students complete a Design Project, which requires them to integrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their previous 3 years of study, and an Individual Capstone Project, which provides them with research experience that advances their intellectual development.

- For those who are applying on the basis of A-Level qualifications: E in 3 A-Level subjects OR E in 2 A-Level and 2 AS-Level subjects;
- For those who are applying on the basis of International Baccalaureate (IB): a minimum score of 24 with at least grade 4 in 2 Higher Level (HL) subjects;
- For those who are applying on the basis of other qualifications: an appropriate Diploma passed with credit or an appropriate Higher Certificate from a recognised institution; an appropriate Associate Degree / Higher Diploma from a recognised institution; holder of other non-local qualifications (please refer to our Guidelines on Non-local Qualifications for more details about our general requirements for such qualifications)
