Key facts
This is a 4-year programme offered by the School of Arts and Social Sciences in the face-to-face teaching mode. The Creative Writing and Film Arts (Honours) programme of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University provides students with an in-depth education and professional training in Creative Writing and Film Arts. Students will be assessed continuously on the quality of assignments, projects, essays, presentations and/or examinations. Programme facilities include film/TV production studios, film editing labs, computer graphics labs, arts studios and sound studios.
Graduates of the programme will be fully equipped to work in a range of jobs in the media and creative industries, such as script writer, director, cinematographer, editor, reporter, copywriter, film critic, novelist and multimedia writer. They can also further their studies in the area of film studies, film making, literature, media and cultural studies, or other related subjects.
Aims and Objectives
Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to:
- Master the skills in novel writing, screen writing and film criticism;
- Produce critiques on creative writings of different genres;
- Put into practice the knowledge learned in the history, theory and aesthetics of world cinema; and
- Master the techniques and skills in film and video production.
Career Prospects
With a BA (Hons) Degree in Creative Writing and Film Arts, students are well suited for a wide range of careers in the creative media industries such as advertising design, film production, publishing, mass media, teaching, office work and management.
Further Studies
Opportunities for postgraduate studies in film studies, film production, literature, design, media, or related fields such as performance studies and communication, are available in Hong Kong and abroad.

General requirements
- Applicants with Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) qualifications are required to obtain Level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language, as well as Level 2 or above in Mathematics, Liberal Studies and an elective subject3 (or equivalent).
- Applicants with local academic qualifications other than HKDSE are required to:
- Complete Year 1 study of a recognized Associate Degree or Higher Diploma programme; or
- Obtain Grade E or above in AS Chinese Language & Culture4 and Use of English, and 2 AL / 1 AL plus 2 AS / 4 AS subjects in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (or equivalent).
- Applicants with non-local academic qualifications are required to obtain:
- Grade E or above in 2 AL / 1AL plus 2 AS subjects5 in the General Certificate of Education AL / International AL; or
- An overall minimum score of 24 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma; or
- Other equivalent overseas academic qualifications (as determined by the University).
