Overview
The Classical Studies programme at Mount Allison University provides an immersive academic experience into the history, languages, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. Students engage with the foundational elements of Western civilisation through a multidisciplinary lens that encompasses literature, art, and political structures.
This field of study is unique for its academic breadth, requiring students to develop skills as linguists, historians, and sociologists. By examining the roots of modern law and religion, participants gain a sophisticated perspective on how ancient societies continue to influence contemporary global culture and thought.
Why Classical Studies at Mount Allison University?
Mount Allison University is consistently recognised as a leading undergraduate institution in Canada, providing a supportive environment for scholarly growth. The department is a tight-knit community where small class sizes ensure students receive personalised mentorship and develop close professional relationships with faculty members.
The programme is significantly enhanced by the J.E.A. Crake Foundation, which funds prestigious initiatives such as the Crake Travelling Scholarship for summer study in Europe. Students also benefit from the annual Crake Lectures, which bring world-renowned international scholars to the campus to share cutting-edge research.
Experiential learning is a cornerstone of the curriculum, highlighted by the Archaeological Field School in Italy. This summer programme allows students to join a research team on a working excavation, gaining hands-on experience in the collection, recording, and processing of ancient artefacts within a professional field setting.
