Run by the Department of English under the Faculty of Arts, the Contemporary English Studies (Honours) programme from Lingnan University combines literature and language studies. It develops students’ critical and cultural awareness, as well as their analytical ability and all-round proficiency in English.

Mastering the world language holistically

With three inter-related strands - Contemporary Literature in English, Applied Linguistic Studies and Language Studies - the BA (Hons) Contemporary English Studies emphasises language proficiency and a level of academic excellence that can lead on to further studies in the discipline.

English as the world language

Unlike other language programmes in Hong Kong, the Contemporary English Studies (Honours) programme from Lingnan University views English Studies holistically, making connections between language and literature at every opportunity. It introduces students to, and prepares them for, English as a mode of thinking that encompasses literary, linguistic and practical aspects. This is done in the context of “World English”, not merely looking at things from British or North American perspectives.

Therefore, the courses focus on English literature with contemporary resonance, and the language as it is currently used in Hong Kong and around the world.

Career Opportunity

The Department is known for its teaching and research excellence particularly in such areas as drama and performance, life writing and argumentative writing, metaphor and semiotics, critical discourse and digital literacy. Therefore, graduates have the chance to enter a range of careers where the combination of communication skills, language ability and cultural awareness is important. This includes sectors like financial services, the legal profession and education.

Many graduates have also gone on to postgraduate studies in English literature, linguistics or language studies and have a track record of research excellence.
