The DIFS was founded in 1981 when the former JLB Smith Institute of Ichthyology (now South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity - SAIAB), became a National Museum. It is the only department of its kind on the Southern Hemisphere.

Since then, the Ichthyology and Fisheries Science program of Rhodes University has graduated more than 150 Honours, Masters and PhD students. In 1998 the DIFS began offering a two year major in Ichthyology which students may read as part of the BSc degree.

87% of our graduates are employed or self employed in the fields in which they gained expertise at Rhodes University - in academia, research, aquaculture, fisheries management, stock assessment, conservation or sport fisheries management. Nationally and internationally our graduates are highly competitive and may be found in Canada, the USA, Europe, Australia, China and throughout Africa and South Africa.

Programme Structure

Courses include:

Ichthyology II is the first of the undergraduate courses, available to study in the second year of undergraduate study.

The course comprises Ichthyology 201 & 202. Students are introduced to the imense diversity of fish that exist in freshwater and marine systems.

Among the subjects explored are physiology and anatomy (with students required to construct a fish skeleton from the bones of a fish). This course aims to heighten the curiosity of learners interested in studying ichthyology.

An APS score of 40 points and above will receive a firm offer, 37-39 points will remain on hold until the end of September to be considered by the Dean if space is available
Applicants who have passed A levels are eligilble for full exemption provided the passes in approved subjects meet the following requirements:
- A-level: symbols A-E (minimum of 2 subjects)
- AS-level: symbols A-D (4 subjects and 1 at O-level)
- O-level: symbols A-C (maximum of 3 subjects)
- At least 2 subjects at A-level and 3 different subjects at O-level or 3 subjects at A-level and 2 at O-level
HIGCSE/IGCSE qualification:
- HIGCSE: symbols 1-3 (4 subjects)
- IGCSE: symbols A-C (1 subject)
International Baccalaureate (B)
- 3 High level (HL) subjects: Grade 4
- 4 Standard Level (SL) subjects: Grade 5
