At a fundamental level, this discipline incorporates the analysis of both the functional and structural roles of macromolecules (such as nucleic acids, enzymes, hormones, proteins and fats) with the study of how these compounds interact to influence cell biology or the external environment.

The study of Biochemistry at the Rhodes University reveals the complexity of even the simplest system, through the analysis of these reaction pathways. The knowledge gained from fundamental biochemical studies is translated into applied research to understand human and animal diseases, inform drug development, understand chemical toxicity and remediate the environment. There are a number of research and teaching themes in the department, including environmental and medical biochemistry. In addition, students are trained in the essential practical techniques required to conduct independent biochemical research.

General Requirements

  • Admission into Honours programmes requires a minimum of 60% (and usually higher) in the major to be studied.
  • Unfortunately, based on past experience, graduates from some other institutions are often not sufficiently prepared for the academic rigour of many of the Rhodes University Honours programmes and a grade higher than 60% is required before these graduates can be admitted.
  • Acceptance is departmentally determined but authorized by the Dean and is also dependant on the supervisory and resource capacity in the department. The effectiveness of this admissions process and subsequent support mechanisms for Honours students can be measured by the 96-100% pass rate by these students.
