The Mechanical Engineering (Hons) programme is offered at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Year 1 will establish the fundamentals of engineering science, mathematics and practical and project skills in mechanical engineering. In Year 2, you will further develop your scientific and analytical skills through study of solid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering mathematics. You will take on a specialist role in a multi-disciplinary group project and start detailed planning of your career. Specialist options and projects in Year 3, all informed by the School of Engineering's active research and industrial partnerships, will give you experience of the latest engineering challenges faced by industry and society.

Features and benefits of the course
  • This degree course shares a common first and second year with our MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering and a common first year with our MEng and BEng degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, so you may be able to transfer between courses.
  • All units have been designed to use up to date examples from the world of engineering. Every year, the School of Engineering invites industrial and academic colleagues to set new, ?live? projects that challenge our students to devise innovative solutions to current problems. You will get feedback and advice directly from industrialists and have the chance to find out exactly what it takes to impress a potential future employer.
  • You will have the opportunity to work with other students in the Student Society on extra-curricular projects to apply and showcase your engineering and design skills in, for example, the Formula Student racing car competition or the Engineering For People Design Challenge.
Your career prospects after the course

There is a national shortage of graduate engineers making our graduates highly sought after by employers.

There is also a high demand for design engineers and product designers in small to medium enterprises.

Engineering graduates enjoy one of the lowest unemployment rates and one of the best starting salaries.

Our recent graduates occupy a variety of roles in engineering consultancies, manufacturing, aircraft design and manufacture, automotive and railway engineering, steel manufacturing, naval engineering, water companies and the power and nuclear fuels industries.

Employers outside of engineering sectors also recognise the skills and problem-solving capacity of the engineering graduate, and there may be opportunities in sales, commissioning, finance, teaching and management as well as roles managing technology to support a range of organisations.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Academic Requirements

  • 104-112 UCAS Tariff Points at A2 (Grades BCC-BBC) to include A2 grade C in mathematics plus one A2 grade C from a science, engineering or technology subject.
  • BTEC National Diploma/BTEC National Extended Diploma at Level 3 (Grades DMM/D*D) in Engineering to include one of the following units with a minimum grade of Merit:
  • 7 Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems8 Further Engineering Mathematics
  • GCSE grade C or grade 4 in English Language, Science and Mathematics. Level 2 Functional Skills English also accepted.
  • Pass Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject (Engineering/Science) with a minimum 106 UCAS Tariff Points to include a Level 3 Maths unit with a minimum grade Merit.

Manchester Met is making a limited number of Vice-Chancellor scholarships available, each to the value of £5,000 (2018/19). These scholarships are open to international students who enrol on a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught programme in September 2018 or January 2019.
