Overview

The Photography programme of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague can be viewed as an inverted funnel. In the first years, you work on a lot of different assignments where the aim is to get you up to speed with basic theories, concepts and technical skills. In the second year of your studies, you continue into your specialisation: Documentary or Fiction. After the second year, you start working on longer-term projects that you define yourself. Apart from being creative in the field of making work, we also challenge you to create new business models. Being a professional photographer today means more than just producing work alone.

Professional Perspective

Our goal is to teach you how to become an independent thinker who creates visual projects. Studying at the KABK will help you become the professional of tomorrow within an international context. Alumni have described studying at the KABK as an intense yet fruitful experience.

The contemporary work field of professional photography is the starting point for the overall study trajectory. Our international team of teachers reflects the diversity of the professionals of today. They are all practicing photographers working in a variety of fields - from fine arts to documentary and editorial to fashion.

We educate you to become an outstanding photographer and true author of your work. Research is the base of every project. There is a strong emphasis on audience engagement and entrepreneurial skills; you communicate your work on different platforms. As a KABK graduate you will know how to connect with the professional field and build, maintain and develop your own photography practice.

General Requirements

  • High school diploma comparable to a Dutch vwo, havo or mbo 4 diploma. If you do not have the required diploma, but are able to prove - on the basis of an assessment authorized by the KABK - that you actually function at the desired level, you can also apply for admission.
  • Non-EEA students are required to provide proof of English Language proficiency.
