At the Pop programme from Codarts Rotterdam you can learn how to make your hands or your voice do what your mind dreams of. You follow intense classes with your instrument. You play in bands with fellow students from your own and other music departments. You gain stage experience, both within Codarts and far beyond the academy’s setting. 

All this helps you develop into an experienced musician who knows the profession from A to Z, from writing to performing, from producing to doing business.

Our main subjects are: voice, songwriting, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, Hammond organ, drums and creative producer.

Programme Structure

The first year (the propaedeutic phase) consists of a broad introduction to the profession. You grow as a musician and as a person.

  • You learn how to better understand and control your instrument.
  • Together with fellow students you form a band. You learn how to play and write music together and you work in a recording studio.
  • Studying general music theory and music history gives you a better understanding of the music that you make.
  • You take part in project weeks. There are many different programmes to choose from, from microphone technique to stage presentation.
  • You take an introductory course in business and health & well-being (hearing protection, responsible use of your voice, et cetera).
  • In the lessons about home recording you learn about editing and recording techniques.

English Language Requirements

This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.

General Requirements

  • To be admitted at the Bachelor of Music (Pop) at Codarts a specific entrance audition must be passed. Each area of study has its own admission procedure with accompanying selection criteria and supplementary requirements.
  • To enroll at Codarts you should be in possession of a havo diploma, mbo bve-level 4 or a (foreign) certificate of equivalent value, in which the subject packet or the profile is of secondary importance. In special cases the above diploma demands can be set aside. The student-to-be then has the possibility to take a capacity test, to check if there is sufficient general development to be able to follow the study. The fees for this test are charged to the student-to-be.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.


Holland ScholarshipThe Holland Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s in Holland. The ‘Holland Scholarships’ is only available for a limited amount of students who according to Codarts have an exceptional talent.
