Overview

The BA in Fashion Design at NABA helps students develop their ideas through making, discussion and collaboration. Over three years at NABA’s Milan or Rome campus, they learn to research a theme, work with materials and take a fashion concept through the design and production process. They also consider how fashion is presented and communicated to an audience.

Students choose between two specialisations available at both campuses:

Fashion Design: Students focus on designing collections, exploring womenswear, menswear, accessories and textiles while developing their knowledge of materials, manufacturing, illustration and technical drawing.
Fashion Styling and Communication: Students focus on how fashion is presented through images and visual communication, including editorial content, campaigns, events, video and digital platforms.

The programme awards 180 CFA and leads to a First Level Academic Degree. Graduates may pursue careers as:

Accreditation

NABA’s Bachelor of Arts qualifications are recognised by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), have full legal status and are equivalent to the corresponding university degrees. The academic credits awarded can support progression to further study at academies and universities in Italy and abroad, subject to each institution’s admission requirements.

Programme Structure

The BA in Fashion Design at NABA combines theory, practical projects and workshops. After the first year, students select Fashion Design or Fashion Styling and Communication as their specialisation and take specialist and elective modules.

First year: Learn fashion design methods, visual representation and prototyping. Study production processes, textiles, textile drawing and knitwear, alongside costume history, textile design and project methodology.
Second year: Explore pattern cutting, accessory design, digital technologies, fashion publishing, multimedia design and illustration. Practical projects develop collections, visual languages, communication and marketing strategies.
Third year: Complete a substantial project in the chosen specialisation, creating either an original fashion collection or a fashion-focused visual communication concept. Specialist and theoretical study supports a personal approach and the final thesis project.

General requirements

International applicants to a NABA Bachelor of Arts programme must meet these requirements and pass the admission test:

Academic qualification: Applicants must hold a secondary or high school diploma awarded after at least 12 years of schooling. The diploma must be legalised by the Italian embassy in the country whose education system issued it, translated and notarised by the Italian embassy or consulate in the country of issue, regardless of the school’s location. The diplomatic authority will also issue a Declaration of Value (Dichiarazione di valore in loco).
English-language proficiency: For a BA taught in English, applicants must submit one of the English-language certificates accepted by NABA. It must be submitted within the month before the programme begins and must be no more than two years old. Native speakers and graduates of English-taught high schools may be exempt, subject to verification by the NABA Admission Office.
