From meteorological point of view, Indonesian region is considered unique in that it is affected by its maritime continent features with its complicated weather and climatic patterns. It is for these very reasons that, in addition to being a challenge for us to better understand it, meteorology serves as the opportunity for applying sciences. It plays a greater role in contributing more to the development of monsoon tropical meteorology at an international scale.
The scopes of Meteorological education and teaching are closely related to Physics, Mathematics and Earth Sciences, and therefore these subjects serve as the Specialist Basic Subjects (Mata Kuliah Dasar Keahlian) in meteorology. The higher the level of study, the fewer the specialist basic subjects; the composition changes, i.e., most of the subjects to take are specialist subjects such as meteorology, climatologic, physics and dynamic meteorology and so on.
Global climate change happened due to global warming that occurs as an implication of the increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Global warming causes an increase in temperature and sea level rise which is the biggest threat in the world since 400,000 years ago, has been projected a rise in temperature to 1.5 (degrees Celsius) and 6.5 (degrees Celsius) in the future. This increasing temperature will have many negative impacts on human life, especially the increasing incidence of extreme weather such as tropical storm, heat wave in Europe, drought and flood. This temperature projection is studied in several lectures in meteorology courses.
The Effort to overcome these negative impacts will be especially needed for archipelagic countries like Indonesia that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. However, these efforts can only be made appropriately if we understand the Earth’s overall climate system. Therefore, an understanding of the Earth’s weather and climate system becomes very important and vital. The Meteorology Study Program also develops physical and atmospheric dynamic modeling, making it easier to study natural phenomena for various purposes, both for research purposes and for the benefit of society and national development.
