History
Established in 1892 by Emily Ward, Norland pioneered the professionalization of childcare. Over its long history, it has maintained a prestigious reputation, adapting its curriculum to incorporate contemporary research and practices in early childhood education.
Education
Norland offers a comprehensive education combining a BA (Hons) degree in Early Childhood Education and Care with the Norland Diploma. This integrated program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for high-quality childcare.
Around a third of the course is spent on placement in a minimum of eight different placements, gaining real world experience in a range of early years settings.
Norland’s comprehensive and employability-focused training includes a value-added curriculum that teaches additional skills such as paediatric first aid, self-defence, cyber security, advanced driving skills and dedicated employment training.
Research
Norland emphasizes research-informed teaching, ensuring that the curriculum reflects the latest developments in early childhood education. Faculty members engage in ongoing research activities to enhance the quality of education provided.
Career
Graduates, known as Norlanders, benefit from exceptional career opportunities. Norland operates its own employment agency, supporting alumni in securing positions worldwide.
Demand for Norland Nannies has consistently outstripped supply for over 130 years, due to the exceptional reputation of Norlanders. In 2023, there were an average of six jobs for every Norlander seeking one through the agency. The average earnings of Norland graduates are well above average graduate salaries, on a par only with medical and economics graduates. The average starting salary for a recently qualified Norland Nanny is £47,600, rising to £65,000 after five years.
