CMU-Africa was established in 2011 and is the only U.S. research university offering its master’s degrees with a full-time faculty, staff and operations in Africa.
Education
Our mission is to produce creative and technically strong engineers, who have been trained in the African context, and prepared to make transformative impact in their communities and the world.
Research
CMU-Africa faculty, students and alumni are actively engaged in relevant research projects that respond to the challenges and opportunities in Africa. These have resulted in published journal and conference papers, raising the profile of Rwanda as a country where academic research is being pursued.
Career
Both first- and second-year students participate in our annual career fair, with first-year students seeking internships and second-year students exploring employment options.
The career fair allows students to engage with recruitment officers and attend information sessions and networking events. Registration for our next career fair will be available in the Spring.
Carnegie Mellon University Africa offers a wide range of opportunities for local and international industries to engage, including corporate internships, master's practicums, research collaborations and programs for sponsoring students through scholarships.

Housing services
CMU-Africa is a non-residential campus. Students are responsible for their own living costs such as housing and dining costs. For international students, it is important to plan and prepare a budget before you arrive in Kigali. Your tuition fees do not include living costs. Students planning to apply to CMU-Africa can anticipate these costs.
ICT services
Computing Services supports the research, education mission, and associated administrative functions of Carnegie Mellon University. The Help Center provides students, faculty, and staff members with technical assistance and information about computing at Carnegie Mellon University Africa.
Medical services
The U.S. Embassy has an extensive list of medical facilities in Rwanda, including hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.
All students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to register for the CMU-Africa Alert Emergency Notification Service, which sends text messages and emails to registered phones and email accounts in the event of a campus emergency.
Campus life
Kigali is an exciting and lively place to visit, study and work. One of the first things most people notice is that Kigali is spotlessly clean. Residents of Rwanda enjoy a low corruption rate and high quality of life, making the country an ideal location for innovative ideas, research and exploration. Known as the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda’s countryside is picturesque -- full of billowing green hills, turquoise lakes and unique wildlife. Students have the opportunity to explore the Rwanda’s remarkable landscape and culture when they aren’t busy with assignments.

Being competitive
My overall study experience has been both challenging and rewarding. I have gained valuable knowledge and practical skills that have helped me grow academically and personally. The learning environment encouraged me to think critically, solve problems, and work independently as well as in groups. What I really liked most about my experience was the support from lecturers and the opportunity to engage in practical activities. These helped me understand concepts better, especially in areas like networking and technology. I also appreciated working with classmates, which improved my communication and teamwork skills. However, there are some areas that could be improved. For example, more access to practical resources and updated equipment would enhance learning. In addition, clearer guidance on some assignments and more time for hands-on practice would make the experience even better.
