  • The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in late 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952.
  • It was located at Tighes Hill—on the same site as the TAFE NSW Hunter Institute, then known as a Technical College. The staff and students of the Newcastle University college shared cramped conditions with their Technical College colleagues.

Our nine residences offer a variety of living options to suit our student community. Library services

The University of Newcastle provides library services at six campuses and a number of affiliate locations.

There are 24 hour study spaces available at Auchmuty Library and Ourimbah Library.

Our aim is to provide our students with welcoming places where students can come to meet, read, study and learn.

ICT services

Information technology (IT) lies at the heart of a modern education and at the University of Newcastle you have access to world-class IT infrastructure and services.

Students at all campuses – including if you are studying remotely – can connect with the University’s suite of computer accounts, and have free access to cutting-edge software and cloud storage.

Medical services

A medical centre is located at both Newcastle and Central Coast campuses. In addition, the Newcastle campus has a pharmacy (for fast prescriptions, travel medicine and general supplies), a physiotherapy clinic, and a pathology service for blood tests. The Central Coast campus has an oral health centre that provides services including oral examinations, oral hygiene, periodontal treatment

NUsport, through our programs, facilities and network of affiliated clubs, is uniquely positioned to enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of our students, staff and wider community.

Throughout its history NUsport has grown and succeeded because it understands and adds value to the role that sport and recreation plays within the University of Newcastle and the wider community. It has worked with students and staff of the University of Newcastle, sporting authorities and groups and with the wider community to promote sport as an essential part of life.

The overall experience as an international students studying in University of Newcastle (UON) have been horrible. The lack of support, the false delusion that it is the best medical school and complete lack of awareness of its faults made the experience of studying medicine very difficult. Content wise, there is no issue, since medical school content is pretty much...

Not worth the sanity

Honestly, the structure of the course is terrible. It’s an MD course that lasts 5 years, but don’t let that fool you. The support system is terrible, the resources provided is subpar, and the questions asked during exams are ridiculously niche. Even the doctors (consultants) who see our questions think it’s ridiculous. The course co-ordinators will spout all their flowery...
