Overview
The International Foundation (Art and Design) programme from The Glasgow School of Art acts as a bridge into the study of undergraduate Art and Design where students can explore their creative practice before choosing an area of specialist study. Learning and teaching is delivered through studio-based projects alongside bespoke tuition in communication within a creative context.
Key facts:
The programme provides a supportive environment for students whilst they develop their studiowork and learn to articulate their understanding of that work in the context of specialist study. Ourdedicated programme staff includes studio tutors and English language tutors who work alongsidestudents to develop a shared knowledge and appreciation of Art and Design. Workshops and demonstrations provide students with skills and technical abilities that are applied in response to assigned project briefs.
The aims of the programme are:
- To provide students with a broad-based introduction to Art and Design studio-basedpractice and a basic knowledge of specialist undergraduate study.
- To foster students’ understanding of creative and sustainable processes that use a range of 2D, 3D and digital making in response to thematic project briefs.
To help students develop basic research practices that support critical and analyticalthinking within an art and design context.
To develop an ability to communicate confidently and effectively using a range of languageresources in a community of shared learning• To develop critical thinking in the context of Art and Design through analysis, reflection andself-evaluation.

General requirements
- Your Digital Portfolio is a selection of images of work that you have made, laid out clearly. It demonstrates your skills, ideas, interests and your suitability for the programme you are applying to. The Digital Portfolio must include no more than 15 slides and should be in PDF format. Remember, you can include more than one image on each slide.
- The Portfolio Statement is an opportunity to expand on your Digital Portfolio, highlight a specific project, further detail your interests or inspiration and tailor your application to your chosen programme at the GSA. It must not exceed 3000 characters (approx. 500 words) and should not be the same as your UCAS Personal Statement. You will be asked to submit this alongside your Digital Portfolio.
To be eligible to apply for the International Foundation you must:
- Be an International Applicant from a Country outside the UK
- Have passed or be about to pass a year 12 equivalent High School qualification
